I love to catch the sunlight splash onto the tops of the houses at the end of the day. It only lasts for a few minutes but it's magical.

The title is the 1930 song that crept into my mind as I painted. That happens a lot if I don't have music playing in my studio so I usually make sure to. I chose to paint this because I've been actively trying to put aside the worry and negative thoughts that our current predicaments find us in. It's not easy to stay aware and involved yet not succumb to despair.

I didn't know more than the "leave your worries on the doorstep" verses but it actually starts out: Walked with no one and talked with no one and I had nothing but shadows. <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The end of the decade had me painting large and immersed in water. This commissioned work was a pleasure; a welcome opportunity to explore a theme I've visited before and with notable differences. Not only have I had the opportunity, over past decades, to swim with this intrepid swimmer (she, more intrepid than I), this piece was a return to a much larger format on 30"x40" stretched canvas. While she was venturing swims in far away locales, I was learning to accept and manage lymphedema (essentially, too much water in me!) and now I can see the influence of these experiences, as they always are, reflected in the work. Here's to hope and serenity in 2020.Mary Pargashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06019602823988365661noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6069650925805252821.post-16188023996552957382019-04-24T23:53:00.003-04:002019-04-24T23:57:58.970-04:00Red Galoshes

These aren't my rain boots although I would be so happy to wear them if they were my size. I had a little visitor brightening this rainy April day. It was lots of fun capturing the slick light reflections on the shiny lipstick red surfaces. You can nearly make out the clouds in them!
Packing up another birthday party and noticing the story they told and how pretty and pink they were inspired a painting. They are archeological layers of parties past and present. Lots of presents. The bottom layer is a plastic tablecloth, and all that remains of a matching ensemble, for a daughter's 6th birthday. Over the years we've added paper lanterns for tea parties, Alice in Wonderland theme parties, wiped off the icing and melted spots with birthday candles. Make a wish! Purchase hereMary Pargashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06019602823988365661noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6069650925805252821.post-21894803087259794812018-11-03T13:53:00.000-04:002018-11-03T14:02:50.895-04:00Fall Chickadee

Look who I found while shuffling and scuffling through the fallen leaves. We had a little chat and she let me know she was okay and was just enjoying the dappled sunlight, like me. A toy airplane waiting on the shelf for little hands to take him airborne again. Out of the shadows and into the light. I especially adore the reflected shadow cast on the wall to the left. "Props" (intended) to Buffalo Springfield for the title. The tune has been running through my mind during and after painting. Available here.Mary Pargashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06019602823988365661noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6069650925805252821.post-39681856037520259652018-05-11T13:23:00.000-04:002018-05-11T13:23:41.960-04:00Peony for Mom

When I garden I think of my mother. She loved her garden and passed that love, the names of plants, and cultivation tips on to me. Like, peonies don't grow in SoCal. So one year I bought her a big bouquet for Mother's Day and drove it through the heat of the Santa Ynez valley. Although I had plenty of water in the bucket, I opened my hatchback to find soggy tissues on leafy stems. Together we tried to revive them in every way and finally left them submerged in a cool bath. They came back to life!
When I eventually moved to the east coast, I planted and painted plenty of peonies. My mom, Mavis, died many years later on a Mother's Day. I miss her but sometimes

I painted the top one and though I love the color, I thought I could do better by trying to stay conscious of my tendency to add more than necessary. Not that the duck is unnecessary but I felt I may have used more brushstrokes and fussed with details in having mindless fun so I took another shot at it. That said, I learned that I like them both. Do you have a clear preference? If so, please feel free to weigh in.

It's been a long time since posting here so I thought I'd share something of what I've been up to. Besides painting some different works not posted and spending days with my sweet grandson, I've been getting back to basics by drawing from live models, which I started back when I was 15. It's a great foundation and sort of like riding a bicycle (only in that you don't forget how). Wednesday night is figure drawing with the local artists' guild so a friend and I go and sketch the models then follow it up with 1/2 price margaritas across the street.Mary Pargashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06019602823988365661noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6069650925805252821.post-38119579198390374082018-02-10T11:42:00.001-05:002018-02-10T11:46:42.688-05:00Lemony Light

What I see from the window above the kitchen sink. When I catch this moment of late afternoon light it makes washing up dishes a happy task. Do you look for these moments? The weather, the lighting, the timing don't always provide them so I caught it with paint. Available here.Mary Pargashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06019602823988365661noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6069650925805252821.post-1060036787467268652018-02-05T15:52:00.000-05:002018-02-05T15:52:44.783-05:00The No Tickets Pizza Day

Of course there's a story. It was a rainy day and my husband and I drove into Manhattan with the idea of a Broadway matinee but the TKTS booth was sold out of whatever we'd wanted to see. We took off in the direction of downtown but passed crowds queued up for the Tribeca Film Festival! Yes! We stood in an info line, stood in another line to get tickets, and another line to be called for standby but left without seeing anything but lines. We headed toward the museum downtown again but got stuck in a lane that took us onto the Brooklyn Bridge. On the other side is DUMBO...and Grimaldi's Pizza! Was getting caught in the no-way-out lane accidental, Mark? Excellent pizza and NO tickets.Mary Pargashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06019602823988365661noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6069650925805252821.post-63022245869100120972018-01-05T12:46:00.000-05:002018-01-05T17:47:57.334-05:00Batter Up!

Batter for belgian waffles, that is. It's the first little painting of 2018! Painterly and luscious with complementary color palette. Opposites on the color wheel rarely please me as much as this combo. Available here.Mary Pargashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06019602823988365661noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6069650925805252821.post-65890647908085341962017-12-11T15:42:00.000-05:002017-12-11T15:44:28.171-05:00It Is So White (Is Not, Is Too)

I think I captured the still cold light that enters my kitchen this time of year. It makes me want to warm up the oven and get baking. This wooden spoon is so old I think it belonged to my mother. The bundt pan is definitely like hers was but long lost. I borrowed one like it from my good neighbor, Gayle, and then returned it wishing I'd painted it. That week I found this one in a consignment shop. It meant to painted.
Ready to hang, it's 10x10" on cradled natural wood 1" deep; no frame needed. Available here.
Landscapes are not my usual fare but I took this photo at the end of our week's getaway to Long Beach Island, New Jersey. It was the last week of September, end of season for them at the end of the day. I was struck by the light bouncing off the glass and how they all seemed to be staring in the same direction as if they were watching the tourists go home. Available hereMary Pargashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06019602823988365661noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6069650925805252821.post-79500582588022963972017-09-22T17:45:00.004-04:002017-10-09T19:07:17.542-04:00Cara Cara In The Moonlight

Summer's end. We are going to spend a week by the sea. Just like these wedges of reddish oranges, basking in the light of the moon. Heh heh. I could use a vacation about now.
This sunny lemon and matching juice reamer were painted upside down(!) as a challenge to paint what we see rather than what we think we know. It's lots of fun and I challenge you to try it. Look at things differently. Don't put a label on it. Well, this lemon has a label on it but you know what I mean. Available here at my lemonade stand.Mary Pargashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06019602823988365661noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6069650925805252821.post-9590045356459326442017-08-17T08:45:00.000-04:002017-08-26T16:43:03.684-04:00The Other Chanel

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">After an early bout with something from Avon for little girls that smelled like carnations, I moved on to eschew Patchouli Oil and embrace Jasmine Oil. Fortunately, my girl squad got together to gift me Chanel No.19. Was it because my birthday is on the 19th like Coco's? Or maybe because it had just been released in 1971, our first year of high school, and advertised as "The Unexpected Chanel", "The Outspoken Chanel". Coco Chanel reportedly pronounced it, "Audacious and assertive. Never conventional." I loved it. No.19 was discontinued in 2000. SOLDMary Pargashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06019602823988365661noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6069650925805252821.post-50458368999641540852017-08-09T10:51:00.000-04:002017-08-09T10:51:19.641-04:00Heart of Darkness

Or I might have called it, This Is Not My Home. This is a hummingbird's nest that was one of many built in a ficus tree at my home in SoCal, where there was an atrium. I guess because it was protected from cats and other predators, we had many generations of hummingbirds making it home. The egg was found under a robin's nest which was built in our Colorado (my husband's home) Spruce and although quite prickly it is less protected from attack. Click to buyMary Pargashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06019602823988365661noreply@blogger.com0
